what is the best way to clean a diamond ring at home?
a friend of mine told me to get some cloudy ammonia and soak my ring in it for half an hour to an hour, then brush it with a toothbrush, rinse and then wipe it with a non-abbrasive cloth. we did this today with her ring and it looked great!!
while this method worked great, i am a bit worries that it will wear away at the gold. will it? if so, what is another good way to clean it at home? the jewellery store we bought it from offers free ultrasonic cleaning but we have moved away and i would like to be able to make it sparkle as i wear it every day and it gets quite dirty.
my ring is 18 carat white and yellow gold, and has a complicated setting so there are a lot of nooks and crannies for dirt to get caught.
Ammonia doesn’t do anything to the ring – it doesn’t help clean the ring. What is recommended is warm water, and a drop of ‘dawn liquid soap’. Brush it with a soft toothbrush and your ring will look like it’s brand new! You can do this once a week without worrying about damaging the ring or wearing down the color of your gold.
