Bite Guards For Teeth Grinding
Types Of Night Guards
Teeth grinding and clenching can totally ruin a perfect night of sleep. It can lead to turning and tossing, and not only keep you from sleeping, but also your sleeping partner as well. This night time jaw clenching is known as Bruxism, and if you don’t do something to treat it early on it can lead to some serious dental or mental difficulties. Teeth grinding can be experienced by adults, as well as children, and almost anyone can experience this condition. There are several ways to relieve this malady, but probably the easiest first step is to employ the use of a grinding teeth mouth guard.
These devices are also known as night guards, and all it simply consists of a piece of molded plastic that you put in your mouth at bed time. The plastic acts as a cushion between your teeth, and prevents stresses from damaging your dental structure. The night guard also acts a cushion to soften the bite down forces of the jaw, and relieves the tension in your jaw muscles. This device keeps the upper teeth from grinding with the lower teeth, offering an instant solution to teeth clenching problems. You can go to your dentist to and pay a lot of money for a custom fit medical mouth guard. However, you should only do this after you have tried to use the more common found night guards found at your local drug store that can be purchased for a fraction of the cost. Here are some things to consider before, during, and after you purchase a night guard.
Look for a mouth guard that is going to provide the most comfortable fit. They are not all the same, and you need to take the device out of its packaging and visually inspect it. They come in a one size fits all style, but you may have to use some scissors to trim it back some if it its too long, or if it sticks up too high in your mouth. Most any common drug store will carry the device, and they are readily available. You can even go to a local sporting goods store and use athletic mouth guards, as they can work just as well. Unfortunately, you will not be able to fit them in your mouth before you buy it, so do your best visual inspection to asses the fit. It will only be when you get home and place it in boiling water and then bite down that you can check the fit. You don’t want one that is too loose, and not too snug, but there is an in between fit that is just right.
If you spend over ten dollars for your night guard you will want a product that is durable and is made of quality materials. These night guards are made by several companies with different brand names, so shop around and compare how well they are made. They range in price from a dollar a piece for the athletic mouth guards, to over twenty dollars for the drug store variety, or if you buy it from your dentist it can cost well over one hundred dollars. Some of these mouth guards are made of food grade rubber, while others are constructed from a soft food grade plastic. The rubber mouth guards tend to hold up longer but don’t have a really good fit. The plastic type products tend to fit really well, but are not durable and need to be replaced from time to time. You will have to see what is more important with either fit or durability when you make your purchasing decision.
If you really want the best fitting teeth grinding mouth guard you will have to go to your dentist’s office. As mentioned previously, this is the most expensive option, but these are the best night guards available. When you visit your dentist he will measure the size of your mouth, analyze your tooth patterns, and inspect the contours of your jaw and gums. For the most severe cases of night Bruxism it is best to spend a little more money to purchase the device from your dentist. You can start off with a less expensive night guard from a drug store, but if this doesn’t provide relieve please be advised that you will probably have to pay the dentist a visit. However, spending a hundred dollars for a life time of relief is not much at all.
Night guards are either going to be single pad or double pad construction. If you can afford it, and the fit is comfortable, the double pad version is the more effective way to go. As usual, this may cost a little more money, but for more severe cases of Bruxism it may be the only way to find relief. Double wall guards are designed for an entire night of sleep. They way they are made provides for an excellent fit, and maximum protection. The single wall night guards are the typical boil and byte types that are commonly found. You dunk them in boiling water and them place it in your mouth and bite down. Fore less severe cases of Bruxism they will do just fine and save you some money. But they do fit a little looser, and will not last nearly as long.
If you find that you need relief from night Bruxism a simple and effective first step is to acquire a grinding teeth mouth guard.
