Bruxism Device
A number of years ago as a young man I had a bad toothache and had to go to the dentist. The dentist gave me a lecture about how poor my oral hygiene habits obviously were, and on this occasion he proceeded on to give me my first root canal. I had let that particular tooth deteriorate to the point that this was the only way to save it.
The words of this dentist stuck with me, however, and I am still following his advice today after many years. His advice was to use a WaterPik® machine. He said that if I had used one of those devices I would not have had to have an introduction that day into the world of root canals, and for that matter I would not have needed the many fillings that already peppered the inside of my mouth. He also said that if all his patients would use such a machine they would eliminate half of their dental problems or more.
I have been using a WaterPik® for many years now, and I have not developed any new cavities for over twenty five years. Most of the dental work I need these days, and that is not much, is to re-do very old work like replacing worn out fillings.
A WaterPik® is a small device that has a tank to fill with about a cup or two of water. The machine plugs into a wall socket, and a pulsating stream of water is forced out of a plastic tip at the end of hollow flexible tube. While the machine is shooting water out the tip, you aim the stream of water either between the teeth or along the gum line. I usually start on the front side of my mouth and then do the back sides, which are a little more difficult to reach, but even this is not hard. The machine will both clean residue that is on or between teeth, and it will help get rid of daily plaque. More importantly it serves to exercise the gums and keep them healthy.
Many people have gum disease or its precursor, called gingivitis. These diseases are the largest cause of losing teeth. Gums that resist bleeding during tooth brushing or when a dental hygienist puts pressure on them when doing a professional cleaning are healthy and should cause no problems.
Since dental plaque accumulates every day of our lives, one must devote some time every day to remove it. Brushing teeth twice a day, flossing your teeth, and using a WaterPik® machine on a routine basis will go a long way to avoiding most dental problems. These efforts, along with a trip to the dentist office for a checkup and a cleaning by a hygienist every month are all that most people need to keep a healthy mouth and a healthy set of teeth.
