Electric Toothbrush Dentist Recommended

From an environmental standpoint, which is better: an battery-operated or electrical rechargeable toothbrush?

My dentist recommended I use an electric toothbrush. Works great, not throwing out an entire toothbrush every 3 months is good for the environment, etc. But based solely on the environmental effects, is it better to throw out batteries or use up electricity?

If you absolutely have to use the electric toothbrush for medical reasons, I would choose the rechargeable toothbrush. However, try to get one that indicates when it is done charging, then unplug it once its batteries are full. No need to constantly draw energy from the electrical grid when your toothbrush is already fully powered. I would also ask your dentist if it is really necessary that you use a power toothbrush.
