Electric Toothbrushes Dentist
Should I start using an electric toothbrush?
I just visited my dentist and was told that I have some gum recession from brushing too hard. I brush 3-4 times a day with a soft toothbrush, but in past visits I was also told that I was brushing too hard, so this result is somewhat not surprising. I don’t want to be brushing not hard enough. There seems to be a fine line. The dentist also found several “buccal” cavities. I don’t know what this means. They suggested an electric toothbrush. Do dentists recommend electric toothbrushes for all their patients, or would an electric toothbrush really be of benefit to me? Does an electric toothbrish really clean tooth surfaces better than the manual one?
Also, if I go for the electric toothbrush, what brand should it be, what model? Does anyone have any recommenations or personal experiences?
That is great advice – brushing with two fingers really makes you be more gentle. Thanks for the recommendation about the pressure sensitive electric toothbrush – I’ll look into it.
If you do get an electric toothbrush, just don’t get one of the cheap ones. I’m not saying you have to get the most expensive one either. One you should be looking for is one that has a sensor that will stop if you put too much pressure on the bristles. That will keep you from brushing too hard. If it doesn’t have this sensor, you may actually cause MORE damage with the toothbrush because you’ll be pushing down as hard as you normally do… but with many many more rotations per minute. I had to switch back to my regular toothbrush for that reason. When you brush with a manual brush, try using only 2 fingers. It makes it more difficult to brush too hard.
