General And Cosmetic Dentistry

General Dentistry Questions ?

Hello,

I am interested in pursuing a career in dentistry. Could anyone please help with some or all of the following questions.

1.) What DAT score and GPA is typical of students of a “prestigious” dental school?

2.) Other than GPA and DAT, how much are undergraduate internships, essays and interviews with the dental admissions officer considered?

3.) How much does one have to dissect cadavers in dental school?

4.) How many hours should one expect to work as a dentist?

5.) How does one go about obtaining a specialization in something like cosmetic dentistry?

Good choice. I will try and answer the best I can for you.

1. DAT scores should be in the 90th percentile or higher and GPA should be at least 3.7.

2. The more you can wow them the better your chances of getting in so I would say all this extracurricular stuff is important. Remember, most dental schools want well-rounded people.

3. During my anatomy course we dissected a cadaver in which we actually had to do the dissecting ourselves. Six people to a cadaver and we cut everything from the sex organs up. The legs were sent to a podiatry school. Half the course was just on the head and neck alone.

4. It varies. The nice thing about dentistry is you can work as many ours as you need. Right now I work 4 days a week and next year I will be cutting back to 3 days; about 8 hours each day.

5. You must complete specialty training to become a specialist. It usually requires 2 more years of school on average beyond dental school. By the way, cosmetic dentistry is not a specialty. The only recognized dental specialists in the US are Endodontists, Periodontists, Orthodontics, Oral Surgeons, Prosthodontists, Pedodontists, and Oral Radiologists.
