Can I get insurance that isn’t based in my state?

I currently live in South Carolina and I’m in need of a particular surgical procedure, and my current insurance provider rules the surgery as “cosmetic” when in fact, an orthodontist, dentist, and an oral surgeon all suggested that surgery is a good option for me. They’ve all told me the same thing, however, that the surgery is difficult to get approved. So I did a bit of research and only one insurance company in the entire United States covers the procedure (That I could find). But, this insurance (Kaiser Permanente) isn’t offered in my state. It is however offered in Georgia, which is relatively close. So my question is, could I switch to Kaiser Permanente if I don’t live in Georgia, California, or one of their other locations? It’s orthognatic surgery, in case it’s relevant.

~~No, Kaiser as all health insurance is, falls under state laws and can not be used out of state for anything but true emergency care.

Second problem you would have is you have a preexisting medical problem, so Kaiser would not accept you anyway.

You can have one or more of those doctors write a report to “justify” this surgical procedure. If it is indeed something that is coded as a cosmetic procedure, health insurance companies still are suppose to cover these procedures when it is truly for a medical reason. Your doctor/s just need to write an appeal on why it is medically necessary. The only time they can deny these procedures is if they are considered experimental. If that is not the case, then tell your doctor to write the report and submit to the insurance company who will have a review board. Once proven it is medically necessary then they should be required to authorize it. Best of luck.~~
