Tips for Dental Care and Hygiene
Dental health and hygiene is an integral part of our overall body health. Our body is like a machine. If a particular part stops working efficiently or gets damaged, the whole system is damaged. Most people think that they know it all when it comes to proper dental hygiene. But many of us don’t.
Dental care is actually the top-line defense of our mouth against disease-causing germs, mostly bacteria. Dental caries and periodontal disease are the very common among kids and adults. It is also an established fact that the probability of teeth loss is closely linked to a person’s life style. Most oral diseases are consequences of plaque, the yellow material that accumulates on teeth and gums due to bacterial action.
Proper oral care can be divided into subsections that include brushing, flossing and diet.
Brushing
We all brush our teeth, but do we do it the right way? Most probably not. Take a look at the following tips to see if you are doing it the right way.
- Brushes with soft bristles are the best. This will protect your gums while brushing.
- There are many techniques for brushing teeth properly. The most effective is to keep the bristles of the brush at an angle of 45 degrees with the gum line and gently rotate it.
- To remove harmful bacteria and to get rid of bad breath, maintaining a clean tongue is vital. So, the tongue should be regularly cleaned.
- Every time after brushing; clean and rinse with fresh, clean water.
Flossing
Brushing is indisputably the most important part of oral hygiene. But to prevent accumulation of plaque between teeth, flossing is also important. Improper flossing can result in damage to the gums and heavy bleeding. Take a look at some tips for proper flossing:
- Buy special floss yarn made of nylon or plastic. These are readily available in the market. Choose a good brand.
- The floss yarn has to be inserted between the teeth, in areas where plaque is likely to get deposited and treated with a sluggish action of the thread. Don’t overdo the flossing action or you could end up injuring the gums.
- Plaque usually gets deposited at the rim of the teeth near the gums. To prevent extremely painful gum diseases, this should be flossed out.
- Plaque also gets deposited on the inner side of the teeth. That should also be flossed out. Extra care should be taken while flossing because one cannot see the teeth on the rear side.
- While flossing, to prevent a gum injury, heavy flossing must be avoided.
- While flossing, ensure that the floss forms the shape “C”.
Diet
A proper diet is also an important part of oral hygiene. Eat lots of green leafy vegetables for healthy gums. You should also stay away from alcohol, tobacco etc. Visit a dentist at least twice a year.
Good dental hygiene is a reflection of good habits and balanced lifestyle.
