Hard Night Guard
Pregnant and too sick to wear my ‘bite guard’ at night (random, I know). Looking for alternatives?
I wear a bite guard when I sleep because I grind my teeth and clench down very hard. Now that I’m pregnant, I cannot wear it anymore since I am very sick and even with my nausea/vomiting medication, I can’t put it in my mouth without puking. The moment it goes in, I gag and vomit until I take it out. Since I haven’t been wearing it, my jaw is just killing me! Any thoughts on what I can do until I’m not sick anymore? I know, such a random question. Thanks in advance!
Hmm that’s a really tough situation. I would definitely say just don’t wear it until your morning sickness subsides. However, that is not going to help your jaw any, so I would recommend massaging the muscles in your jaw daily, maybe 2-3 times. What you can do it just lay down and relax, put your thumbs on your jaw muscles (about 1 inch away from your ear) and massage as deeply as you can tolerate in small slow circles. After these muscles feel loosened up a bit, put your thumbs against the corner of your lower jaw, right underneath and a little bit behind your ear, and press in as much as you can tolerate (this one REALLY hurts! you will know when you have the right spot). After that give your jaw a good stretch by opening and closing your mouth slowly a few times.
My mother works for a chiropractor and I am frequently in there with complaints of my jaw hurting because I clench in my sleep and I don’t have a mouth guard. This is what he does on my jaw and it always feels a bit better afterwards.
