Does baking soda whiten teeth? Or kill gums?

So I have some stains and plaque on my teeth and I would like to minimize them before going back to school after winter break.
So…I’ve heard that baking soda can ‘whiten’ your teeth, but I have some questions. If you have any personal experiences, please add those.
- Does baking soda really take away stains?
- How many times a week should I use it? Some people say you should use it everyday, others say it should be used MAXIMUM twice per week…which one is it?
- How long will it take to remove the stains/plaque? Days, weeks, months, years?
- Somebody on Yahoo said that when they used baking soda, it made their gums super-sensitive. Has anyone else experienced this?

Baking soda will remove stains but will not whiten teeth.

Baking soda is a little more abrasive than toothpaste so I would not use it regularly. 2-3 times a week would be ok. How long it takes to remove stain will depend on the type of stain and how dark it is. It would be in the order of days and weeks.

Baking soda should not make gums super sensitive; it is often used to improve gum inflammation due to gingivitis and periodontal disease because it is basic (opposite of acidic) in nature. A paste made with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda is excellent for use in patients with gum disease.
