Neuromuscular Dentistry

Anyone had any experience with neuromuscular dentistry?

I’ve been grinding my teeth and clenching my jaw in my sleep since I was a child and have really screwed up the enamel. Now I’m having some dull jaw pain when I chew on the left side. My new dentist says that my grinding is because my jaw isn’t resting in the right position and my jaw muscles are fighting over it all the time. He says that he can non-surgically reposition my jaw with neuromuscular dentistry, a technique he specializes in. They zap the muscles to relax, measure where the jaw ‘wants to be’ and then make a temporary mouth piece to pull it into the correct position until it becomes properly seated.

It sounds logical and sensible from his description, but it’s a) expensive, b) not covered by my insurance and c) really hard to find objective info about on the web (most sites that turn up are dentists who do it, and therefore I think biased in favor). Anyone here have any experiences with this sort of thing?

This sounds pretty cutting edge! I haven’t heard of this, but I would suggest going to www.pubmed.com and searching for information there. This is a site where you can find journal articles published on things like this. You will be able to see what kind of research has been done on it (eg, if you only get two or three hits it might be a bit sketchy). Look at where the studies were done, how many participants it was tested on, and how they chose the participants. (Are the subjects comparable to you?) Look at how they evaluated the outcome, and the timeframe of the experiments.

You’ll still have to read the abstracts critically, but this is about as objective as it gets.

Good luck!
