Dental History: Your Barber Should Hear This
Would you like that tooth pulled after we take a little off the sides? That might have been a question asked a thousand years ago when barbers worked with monks to help extract teeth. Since that time, dentistry has evolved into a practice that centers on diagnosing, preventing and treating diseases concerning teeth, the oral cavity and associated parts.
Rooted in the Indus Valley civilization, dentistry got its start in 7000BC. Likely, the pain associated with rotting teeth and cavities prompted ingenuity in that area and an increased interest in relieving the discomfort of tooth decay.
Looking back makes us glad that we live in an era that provides pain-free procedures, helped along by dental anesthesia. Thankfully, we no longer have monks or barbers to address our teeth issues; instead, we have trained professionals to help care for our teeth before our pearly whites get to the decay point.
Nowadays, we not only have dentists, but orthodontists, pediatric dentists, cosmetic dentists and other dental professionals to correct our problems and help us put our best teeth forward. When looking back at what happened between 7000BC and the 21st century, we can see the stepping stones our ancestors took that brought us to this point.
Through the Years
Like baby steps, dentistry developed in starts and fits. For as long as we have recorded history, we see that our predecessors wanted good teeth. The only difference now is that as a society, we are living longer; therefore our teeth must last longer, too. Take a look at the progress we’ve made in dentistry:
- 7000 BC – first evidence of dentistry being practiced in the Indus Valley Civilization
- 5000 BC – early texts describe legend of a “tooth worm” that causes dental cavities
- 3000 BC – a text, written in the 17th century reflects back to this time showing the treatment of several dental ailments
- 700 BC – first use of dental appliances evolves from the Etruscans in the way of gold crowns and fixed bridgework
- Middle Ages – dentistry has not yet become a profession and dental procedures are performed by barbers and general physicians
- 500-300 BC – Hippocrates and Aristotle write about the pattern of teeth eruption, treating teeth decay and gum disease, tooth extraction and wires to stabilize loose teeth and fractured jaws
- 1530 AD – first book focused on dentistry arrives, “Artzney Buchelin”
- 1685 – first dental textbook, “Operator for the Teeth” is written in English by Charles Allen
- 1650 to 1800 – science of modern dentistry develops when French physician Pierre Fauchard starts dental science in the 17th century with developments like dental prosthesis, dental fillings and his findings that sugar derivative acids are responsible for tooth decay

From the 1800s through the 20th century, many modern-day inventions have helped us take better care of our teeth that have made the process of dental restoration more palatable. Those inventions are:
