Nighttime Mouth Guards
TMJ and Mouth Guards?
I have just recently been diagnosed with TMJ. No nausea or light headedness, just some cracking, popping and occasional pain. My doctor mentioned that it may be caused by night time teeth grinding (which i have been told by my dentist that i do) and i might want to look into getting a night guard mouthpiece. But when i opened the box, it said it was not recommended with people who have TMJ. But doesnt explain why. I want to stop the nighttime grinding, but i dont want to make my TMJ worse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(He just prescribed me an NSAID (Naproxen), some muscle exercises and recommened i use ice packs which i have been)
it depends what kind of mouth guard you are using. the best is a tough rubbery mouth guard that is made specifically for your mouth (so your dentist takes an impression and sends it off to the lab) the mouth guard helps with the tmj because it puts the jaw in a relaxed, unclenched position
