Lump in gums above crown immediately after crown was put on?
I had an small crown replaced with a full crown due to slight decay starting.
As soon as the swelling went away I noticed a hard painless bump in my gums. Went back to dentist and x-ray showed a shadow there. Dentist felt an abscess had developed and recommends a root canal.
Can an abscess develop in 2 days and not change? What is this bump if not an abscess, a scrap of impression material or rope maybe?
Yes it could be an abcess ?. It might have already started before the crown was put on. Just might not have been noticeable. The crown work could have irritated it and make it flare up ? If it is an abcess then you will need a root canal. Most dentist/s take a x-ray before and after they place a crown? Did you dentist take 1? If they had taken 1 they would have noticed the abcess on the x-ray. If the bump was not an abcess, the material would have fallen off and if rope, then the dentist would have cut it. If you are still concerned, call them and tell them you want to be seen again. If you do not trust the dentist, then go get a 2nd opinion.
