Plaque On Teeth
Can Plaque Hold teeth in place?
Doing a bit of research and need to know this. If a point where teeth has a large amount of plaque/Calculus build up that if by removing it would probably have the tooth/teeth fall out. Would it be better to leave it be, as it itself is holding the teeth in place?
Or is that mistaken and the it only appears that way from how much build up on the teeth is shown?
Yes, you are correct. calculus (not plaque by the way..its the soft stuff) can, has, and does splint often diseased teeth thus preventing them from falling out. BUT, as for leaving it in…it’s a matter of health. Calculus is an irritant and source for bacteria….accumulation of it causes the bone loss and loosening of the teeth. Periodontal disease which is caused by the bacteria often associated with calculus has been linked to many other health problems including heart disease. Plus not to mention by keeping it there you assure that all the teeth will fall out whereas if you remove the calculus and non-restorable teeth, the ones that aren’t too far gone yet may last a lot longer. Finally….gross…would anyone really want to keep calculus (calcified debris/food and bacteria) in your mouth.
