Credit card scam – why is this happening like this?
We started getting small but fraudulent charges on a credit card that has (or rather, had) a $30,000 limit. They were for real.com service at first. Then, my wife started getting things charged to the card that she never ordered. The first thing was a DVD course on how to become a real estate agent. The next item was a kit you could use to whiten your teeth. There have been other oddball things coming to our house, using the correct name and address, charged to our credit card. We reported this and the card was immediately cancelled. Why would somebody do this? What would anybody have to gain by charging small items to our card and having them sent to us? Anybody else ever have this happen? The only thing we can remember is that my wife gave the card to a waitress at a restaurant who took it away in order to pay the bill. What are we supposed to do, only pay in cash at expensive restaurants where they offer to take your card “up” for you?
Factoring out a possible minor in the house ordering these things for ‘fun’ here’s my idea of why this would be happening.
Many websites out there offer reseller options through an affiliate service. They pay people to sell their goods. i.e. real.com offers $15 for every person you sign up using your code. My guess, the DVD and whitening kit, all bought from websites using the affiliate code of the perpetrator.
This leads me to believe that everything that was sent to you, was actually benefitting someone to some financial extent.
How they got access to your card? Well there are several possibilities, too numerous to go into.
Glad to hear you did the smart thing and canceled the card, I’d see if you can investigate by contacting some of these companies and seeing if they do in fact have the record of the person who was paid for your sale.
