Teeth clenching – any tips?
Been to my dentist a few months back because of sore jaw in the morning, he said it was TMJ and it is normal for people my age so sent me away again. I asked about a guard for nighttime but he said they don’t even think about that at this stage.
I am still getting sore in the morning, and I also clench my teeth during the day. I feel like I need to bite down on something but we are not allowed gum in college. I sometimes bite my finger but obviously that isn’t a good solution because it hurts.
I am worried that I am damaging my teeth. How can I stop this habit/whatever it is?
I have been exactly where you are and I know what it’s like to have a soar jaw in the morning. You can’t forget that during the day you are in control of what you do. So you can control anything you want to do or not want to do during the day. And by taking control of not wanting to clench your teeth then you will be able to stop. It’s almost like you have to program yourself. It’s like everything that you do you have to remind yourself that you are not going to clench your teeth. During the day clenching is a bad habit that you picked up and now you have to stop it. If you work hard at this then in no time, you will notice that you don’t clench your teeth during the day at all. But for nighttime that is a different story and you will need a night guard. It really surprised me that your dentist didn’t want to give you one. Maybe you should see another dentist and ask for a second opinion. As soon as I had started to use a night guard then I my problems with soar jaw in the mornings were gone. The problem if you don’t get a night guard then you will be doing major problems to your teeth.
