Tmj Night Guards
tmj and acrylic night guards…?? few Qs 10 points to best answer!?
I have TMJ due to grinding. Ive had soft and hard night guards custom made by my dentist but they dont work. The soft guard didnt even last three nights (dentist was shocked at the shape it was in 3 days later). I feel like the acrylic protects my teeth from wearing but doesnt reduce the pressure and is making my TMJ 100% worse.
anyone have experience wearing a night guard for TMJ? did it help? Are there any other types of night guards (like with cushioning to absorb some of the pressure)… any other treatments…?

A few things first. You have TMD, not TMJ. TMJ is the abbreviation for the temporal mandibular joint. TMD means temporal mandibular dysfunction. They is a lot of controversy regarding night guards and TMD. Ask 10 Dentist and you’ll get 11 answers! I personally NEVER use a soft guard. Studies have shown that this actually increases muscle activity. A hard night guard does protect the teeth better and needs to be very carefully adjusted. It may take 2 to 4 weeks to get the adjustment done correctly. I would guess the pain you have with the hard night guard is that it needs to be further adjusted. There is no way known to stop grinding outside of death. You will grind the rest of your life. Do the best thing and make sure to protect your teeth. Ask your Dentist to look at your hard night guard again and adjust it for you. Hang in there, it may take a few weeks for you to adjust to the night guard.
