What is the maximum amount of time I should spend brushing my teeth?
Dentists and dental professionals often say you need to brush your teeth for a minimum of 2 minutes for brushing to be effective. But what is the maximum, assuming a person has no braces or serious dental problems? And I am only talking about the time devoted to brushing, not to flossing, using mouth-wash or a Waterpik. So how many minutes is “too much” when it comes to brushing?
There is no maximum time as such; you can clean your teeth for as long as you like, but the recommended time is 2 minutes and you shouldn’t really need to go over that time in order to clean your teeth properly provided you are brushing in the correct way. There is such a thing as too much brushing – if you brush your teeth for too long too often you may wear away the enamel and start to get abrasion and sensitivity. It’s best to stick to 2 minutes twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed.
